The Rosette Nebula is a bright HII region located at the edge of a giant molecular cloud in Monoceros.
It contains the open cluster NGC 2244, which stars have been formed from.
The radiation of the young O and B class stars excite the atoms in the nebula, producing the emission nebula we see.
The cluster and nebula lie at a distance of 5200 light-years from Earth and span 130 light years in diameter |
